When the paying public wants to see hard hits and accidents on the field, they will happen. Better protective equipment means players feel like they can hit harder. My take is if someone wants to behave like a gladiator, they may also assume full responsibility for all those hits (given and taken) and their awful consequences. Better start saving those pennies.
