Which Weight Loss Program Works Best?

Two thirds of U.S. adults are overweight or obese and excess body weight does not do the body good. Across the nation, 63 percent of Americans have attempted to lose weight at some point in their lives and 29 percent report they are currently trying to lose weight. A recent review of research on 11 popular commercial diet programs found that Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers programs are proven most effective for long-term weight loss, with study participants losing between 3 and 5 percent of their initial weight. Kimberly Gudzune, a Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine researcher, commented that other programs may also achieve such results, but scientific evidence now proves that these two do work to help dieters lose weight and keep it off. Even the 3 to 5 percent of weight loss is an important first step in successfully losing weight.

Skinny Girl works for me because I don't have to do too many modifications only cutback on portion sizes. It also promotes drinking liquids to keep your body flushed, primarily water. I like the flavored ones with no calories.

I am endorsing the Hungry Girl eating plan. This is a plan I can stay with for life! These recipes are fully of veggies, protein and fiber for deliciousness and satisfaction that will compete with carb cravings from day 1. She has a free email you can subscribe to at http://www.hungrygirl.com. She is endorsed by Weight Watchers (where I first heard of her) and includes points in the many recipes seen in her emails. My weight loss began with her diet cookbook and her 8th book with 200 additional HG diet recipes has just been released. There is a free app you can download with the diet cookbook that helps you create your menu for the week, with so many choices, and will also create your shopping list as you choose your recipes.
I have lost about 20 lbs. with an avg. of 2-3 days of 45-min. cardio. (I plan to do more when I'm finished with grad school in a few weeks). More importantly I've lost my craving for heavy-duty carbs, though I still indulge in an occasional treat. The weight loss has edged me away from an almost certain diagnosis of Type II diabetes.

I've loss 34 pounds since November doing the following:
1. Stopped ALL artificial sweeteners
2. Stopped carbonated beverages
3. Counting calories ONLY
4. Using common sense for food choices but allow for some "cheating"
5. Bought "FitBit" and made sure my activity exceeds my caloric intake
11-6-14 BMI was 31.2 = Obese
4-13-15 BMI is 26.0 = Overweight
7 more pounds and I will finally have a normal BMI for the first time in 34 years

Exactly what I did. Then lost Fitbit -- wristband clasp is ridiculous -- and fell off the wagon. I use LoseIt food tracking app. FYI. Good luck. Robert O

old fashioned calorie counting with the web site and app - My Fitness Pal .com. it has changed my life. That in conjunction w/ Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the pounds video series has helped me lose 90 lbs over the last 14 months. the basic formula is eat less >>> move more

I was successful many years ago with Weight Watchers, primarily because of the pre-packaged food (so I didn't have to think about portions or nutritional value). But I got tired of eating the same thing all the time, and craved foods not really on the Weight Watchers menu (also couldn't find a group to join when my group stopped meeting). Now I just watch what I eat (using some of the same methods already submitted in other comments - dividing meals in half when eating out, making sure I get veggies at least once a day if not more, giving myself a "treat" once in a while, and trying to get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day - usually walking). Portion size is key as well, and I've worked to eliminate almost all "white" food (white bread, white potatoes, white sugar, etc.) - I'm also conscious of sugars and gluten in my food. I don't eliminate them, but I do try to limit the amount I consume. I gave up carbonated drinks years ago, and drink tea or water or milk or juice with my meals (I sweeten the tea with Agave Syrup instead of sugar or honey).

For me, I cannot cut food out of my diet that I enjoy for an extended period of time. I have found that by controlling portion sizes, I am able to eat what I like. The key for me is to maintain at least 30 minutes of exercise a day doing activities that I enjoy. If you are forcing a way of life unto yourself, in my opinion, that is a sure fire way to set up an inevitible set back to your undesireable eating habits.

I also think it is key to limit your daily sugar intake. No matter what form you consume sugar in (soda, candy, alcohol, breads that your body metabolizes into sugar), the result is instant gratification of satisfying your sweet tooth. A short time thereafter, you will be craving these foods more intensely. Again, in my opinion only, I would argue that too much sugar consumption is the same as or worse than other bad habits like smoking, drinking, and drug use. Just because it is legal and comes in fun packaging that is often marketed towards children, doesn't mean that these items are harmless on our bodies.

As for me, the best is eating what you want but portion size. Many years ago (and I mean many) there was a TV show Art Likletter Show, and people asked him how he stays the same and doesn't gain weight, and he said eat anything you want but just eat one tablespoon of everything. That made sense. Don't deny yourself at a holiday meal, so I do that, and of course I eat more veggies than anything. When going to a restaurant, I divide my meal into half, and that's all I eat and take the rest home for tomorrows dinner or lunch. My daughter just went on the Nutrisystem diet and lost 12 lbs in four weeks she is so happy. She told me she doesn't have to think grab something from the breakfast box, something from the snack and lunch groups, and she is good to go no thinking. I did at one time do Weight Watchers that was years ago, and I hated counting points, drove me crazy as they say. Simple is best. If you slip don't punish yourself jut start over the next day. There are time you go to a outing and you over-indulge well tomorrow dont starve yourself just get back on your diet and try not to slip too often.
