Patient Story-Jesse Grant

Following is a letter sent from a patient to The Johns Hopkins Hospital about Jesse Grant

Dear Sir/Madam:

I just wanted to make a comment on one of your employees. There is a gentleman named Jesse that works out in front of the main hospital/emergency entrance. Jesse is the kindest soul.  I came there  with my grandson and my mom. My grandson had had eye surgery the day before and was coming for his day one post op visit.  I also had to bring my mom for her appointment.  I was feeling very overwhelmed and stressed out because my grandson had a very difficult night the night before, dealing with post op pain, and my mom is steadily declining and has been falling a lot.  I pulled up at the front entrance to get a wheelchair for my mom and drop her and my grandson off before going to park in the Orleans Street Garage.

Out of nowhere appears this Angel, Jesse.  He immediately got a wheelchair for my mom, helped me get her in the chair, made her laugh and assured me that he would keep an eye on them while I went to park.  My grandson is 14, and he was going to stay with my mom, so she was okay, but it was very sweet of him to offer that.

Several hours later, when I came back to the front entrance to pick them up, there he was again.  I was struggling to get my mom out of the wheelchair and into the car.  Jesse was right there helping me.

This man has the warmest smile and the kindest heart.  He truly got me through a very stressful morning, and after getting somewhat teary, I walked away with a smile.

What an incredible asset he is to Johns Hopkins!!  You are so lucky to have him as an employee, and I was lucky to have him as my Angel on Tuesday.  He is truly a SHINING STAR!!

No job is too big or too small! Mr. Jesse is always willing to help no matter what it is. As an employee things can get extremely tough when your constantly dealing with sadness. But, to see Mr. Jesse in the hall with his kind words and, calm demeanor lets you know that things will be alright. The world needs more Mr. Jesse's

Jesse truly is a gentleman. I had exposure to him everyday when he drove the bus from the Church parking lot. He was the kindest man I had met at Hopkins and offered help to everyone that needed it. He would position the bus in bad weather to allow everyone to board with the least exposure to the weather and he truly wanted to do it. He talked to everyone and listened when you had to something to say. He made the trip to and from the hospital everyday a great experience, I would look forward to seeing his smiling face everyday. I see him around the hospital in his role as a Patient Ambassador and he uses his kindness to help anyone at anytime. He always stops and says hello and asks how you are doing and he does this from the heart, he is not pretentious at all. The world needs more people like Jesse, keep spreading your kindness. Thanks for all you do!!!!

Mr. Jesse,
Please know as much as you touch and bless the experiences of JHH patients each day.
Even those that see you in action each day are influence by your giving and gentle spirit.
You may never know how many are encouraged by the Light that shine from within you and all around you.

From what I have read Johns Hopkins is so blessed to have such a kind gentle soul there to help out... Everyone has a purpose in life, so Mr. Grant I believe that you have found yours... You are the helping hand that everyone needs, the smile that wipes away the tears, the Ram in the Bush, when no one else is there to help... You are the missing piece to the puzzle, the Angel that appears out of no where, the solution to our problems and in the end we are the LUCKY ONES, FOR HAVING SOMEONE AS KIND AS YOU COME INTO OUR LIVES.

I've worked for Hopkins for 32 years and when I moved to Hopkins downtown I had to use the shuttle service from the Church Home garage. Jesse was the driver. It was unbelievable to me how EVERY morning and EVERY evening he had a smile, a laugh, a kind word. For 2 years day in and day out he managed this. He literally made me smile every day and start my day off the right way. He cared - about everyone. He really could work in the president's office and his level of kindness and concern and willingness to do for others would be no different than the stranger he meets at the hospital entrance. You don't come across many Jesses in life. Thank you for making me smile and congratulations on your acknowledgement. You deserve the best!

I have also benefitted from Jesse's kindness and believe he adds a tremendous value to the patient experience at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. In December 2016, my son was admitted to the pediatric ICU. It was the day after Christmas, and after spending a long night in two emergency rooms and finally getting my son settled in his room, my husband and I were in search of a newspaper. The hospital was fairly empty because it was the day many employees had off for the Christmas holiday. But Jesse was there and we passed him in the hallway--moving quickly with clean sneakers and his signature smile. Right away he asked if he could help us with anything. We explained that we were in search of a newspaper and that we had checked several racks. Without hesitation, he gave us the newspaper he was carrying! This simple gesture is the "essence" of Jesse and the reason he always make patients, visitors and staff feel better each time they interact with him.
