Who Are You Thankful for at Work and Why?

During the holidays, people gather together to celebrate family, friends and milestones they're most grateful for. Meanwhile, the spirit of thanksgiving is alive and well at work, as well. In keeping with the season, Dome decided to investigate thankfulness by asking:

At work this year, who are most grateful to? Tell us why.

To see other responses from your colleagues, check out the November issue of Dome on page 5.

Besides being thankful for my family and friends, I am thankful for the family I have at work. For those people who care about me and we care about each other every day. Those people who make you laugh when you are in a bad mood, or maybe just plain sad. Those who give you a hug and a kiss every morning when you arrive to the office. Those people are my family, I have been with them day after day and when we are on vacation, we miss each other.
Thank you Luba, for thanking us every day for coming to work and provide us with dark chocolate, thank you Isabel, thank you Adey for listening, thank you Marlene for your discovers, thank you Victoriana for your singing and your photos, thank you Maria B. for the work you give us to wake up our minds, thank you Juan, for being Juan, thank you Max, and Jeff, and Carlos and Begum and Jorge. Thank you Linda for all the knowledge you put on the table, thank you Virginia, thank you Maria K, and thank you Michael for being loud and keep us updated it with your spinning class log. Thank you all for the morning kiss and for your smile every day. I will keep baking! Let's do it all over again for 2014! Stella Maris Petersen

I am so thankful that I have a job and a decent income when so many people are struggling in these economic times. I am so thankful for my coworkers; they are creative, hard working, funny, and make my days better by being 'them'. I take pride in being part of Hopkins legacy and know that we strive to 'do things right'. And if they aren't, than work on making it so. I am so thankful for the trust of our patients, as it is a great responsibility that we are entrusted with.
In this last year my house burned down and seven weeks later I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Without the love and support from my coworkers and friends, I would not be doing as well as what I am. Their generosity and support are helping me work through the dark times. And making the bright times even better. Just knowing that they are there for me helped me to know that, I will be okay. And receiving world class treatment from my wonderful oncology team made a frightening diagnosis manageable. Dr. Lange, Dr. Wollf, Dr. Zellars, 'my' nurse, Andrea Cox, and the wonderful technicians in radiation oncology, Dana Wloczewski, Kim McNeal, Gregory Pinkney, Steve ___, just rock!
So....so much to be thankful for.

I AM THANKFUL FROM THE PATIENT END AND THE EMPLOYEE END of Johns Hopkins Medicine! My daughter's life has been miraculously saved by Drs. Edward Ahn and Michael Lim (neurosurgeons). I previously worked in Peds here, then took a number of years off to raise my children and be a stay-at-home mom. Now I'm back (different department) and love, love, love my job!

I am grateful that I can serve my full purpose on Mother Earth with humor, healing words and hands, learning from my mistakes and becoming a better human everyday. I am grateful for God and his countless legion of angels that support each of us in millions of ways. I am grateful for the abilty to be hopeful every day. Waking up to sunshine is a blessing beyond words. I relish and appreciate my "light room buddies" who I share stories, sweet snacks, laughter and lessons with....and yes countless minutes fighting with the printer. I am thankful for an amazing boss who allows me to blossom and supports my professional growth in ways unimaginable. I am thankful for being able to serve side by side each and every one of you- You make me proud and grateful each day I come to work serving our community, patients and doctors. Thank you God for making it all possible!!!!!!

I am thankful for the friends I made when I started here 5 years ago and most of all my dear friend Janet Anderson. She is thoughtful, smart, witty and a great sense of humor, most of all keeps she keeps me grounded. I could not ask for a much nicer person to be called my friend. One a good day we can just have a real hearty laugh about something as simple as one of her mom's funny jokes or body language expressions. She has no idea, I'm posting this... priceless!

I'm thankful for all the people who come in each day and take pride in their job. None of us would be able to do any of our world-class research without all of the support people across this campus doing a great job day after day after day. Thank you everyone from Security to Custodial Services to Animal Services to ORA: the people who do so much and who are rarely recognized. Thank you, also, to all the Research Specialists and technicians who do such a great job.

I am thankful for all the wonderful people I work with in the AIP pharmacy and on the floors. The nurses I work with are amazing and fun to be with. Even on tough days they make the day go by smooth with their support and care. I really enjoy working here because of the people I work with.

Although I am so thankful for all of my colleges, my administrator, Natalie Peters, stands out as one that I am most grateful for at work.

In February of this year I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I felt my world was falling apart and I began to get depressed. On the first day of my receiving chemotherapy I received an Edible arrangement from my department. It was nice. I called to thank my administrator for thinking of me. Her reply was, "I Just Wanted To Make You Smile" that to me was words of life. I will forever be grateful to her for wanting to make me smile. She is certainly the best.

I am thankful for all my co-worker's. We are all being asked to do more and it sure does help when the people you work with know how to work cohesively. I am truely grateful for the staff at Occupational Health Services. Debbie

I'm thankful for my marketing communications colleagues. Adam, Carol, Ronna and Sean have passion for our work, and even though we're super busy, they still make time to laugh and remember the time we were all stuck, sweaty in a hot parking garage elevator together, and the time Arthur the mouse surpised one of us in the restroom. They are smart, good people and I don't tell them often enough how nice it is to have them as coworkers and friends.

I have good reasons to be thankful for many people at work. Most of all I have to give thanks to Martha, because she has been the best boss I ever had and a true mentor. Her support, understanding and guidance has made a considerable different in my professional life.

I'm also thankful to a great staff that knows how to go the extra mile and overcome any obstacle as a team.

There are many people in my life who get me through tuff times, but this year it is Amy and Clare.
They always have my back and support me; they are continuously there when I need them the most.
There are non-judgmental; they understand how I feel, they listen. Other people listen too, but they don’t either understand or care enough to be there. Everybody’s jobs are hard but some people need some reassurance and that’s what I can find at Amy’s and Clare.
Thank you ladies.
