Meals are an important tradition in many families, and are often a time to share stories, memories, and a laugh or two. What special recipe did you enjoy around the table with your family? Was it Bubbe's melt-in-your-mouth potato latkes, Uncle Bob's five-alarm chili, or your mom's sweet potato pone? If you can wrestle these secret recipes from your family members -- they might not be written down, after all -- share them in today's Throwback Thursday post.

My grandmother passed down homemade pierogies. Hands down, my fav! We all get together and make a large batch to share. Good times and good food!
My mom makes the very best fresh pork roast with homemade german spaetzle. She usually makes homemade cucumber and onion salad as a side. Yum...
sounds amazing! Love spaetzle. Would love the recipe for the spaetzle and salad if she's willing to share!
Sunday gravy: homemade meatballs, pork, veal in tomato sauce. Slow cook. "Goodfellas" syle!
Homemade German Potato salad.
I'll vote for that!
My Family Favorite Recipe: Fettuccine alla Carbonara. Had it once a year at holiday time.
This time of year there are two... Beef Burgandy (Boeuf Bourguignon if you're French) which I swap in venison if I have it and an extra few drops of Tabasco for zing and Chicken or Turkey Noodle Soup made with lots of Garlic, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme....(I use Simon and Garfunkel's tune for a crutch).
I love the easy casseroles made from leftovers.
Chicken pot pie - left-over chicken, left over veggies (or a bag of frozen mixed veggies), pie crust, gravy made from the chicken drippings, and seasoning to taste. Easy to do & you don't have to be as concerned about the cut of meat, since it all simmers together.
Chicken casserole - left-over chicken mixed with a can of condensed mushroom soup & 1/2 can of milk, topped with left-over stuffing.
We eat a lot of chicken. LOL
My favorite is my mother's Macaroni & Cheese recipe.
Two favorites: My grandmother from the deep south used to make chicken and dumplings from scratch. Also, there's a handed-down recipe from my mother for macaroni-and-cheese that is a favorite. It appears to be my coworkers' favorite at Johns Hopkins as well! 🙂
My grandmother made great homemade gefilte fish, and she handed the recipe down to my mom, who never tried it. I recently found the recipe, which involves 7 pounds of fish, and throwing all the leftover skins and bones in the bottom of the pan where it's all boiled down into a gel. I'm scared to try it.
