Either Harriet the Spy or Encyclopedia Brown.
AND PLEASE DONT FORGET,77 SUNSET STRIP
I have to agree with all those old 70's shows which I also grew up watching. One of my most favorite that I loved, though he was an investigative reporter and not a police detective, was Kolchak:the Night Stalker.
Jim Rockford - The Rockford Files and a couple decades later, Bruce Willis and Cybil Sheppard in Moon ? something or other ? maybe Moonlighting
Going WAY back - black & white versions of Charlie Chan and Sherlock Holmes. Others were: Ellery Queen, Mannix, Magnum, Hart to Hart, Rockford Files, so many OLD good ones.
Illya Kuryakin from The Man from UNCLE
I don't remember watching detective shows as a kid, but I devoured everything by Agatha Christie that I could get my hands on. These days I am strictly PBS Morse, Midsomer Murders, Endeavour, Inspector Lewis and love the new Sherlock.
Past Sherlock Holmes, mid - Columbo, Now Law & Order Criminal Intent, Detective Goren and Eames
There were so many great ones to choose from but I loved McGarrett on the orginal Hawaii Five-O also Mannix and Cannon. I would have to say though that my favorite detective was actually Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick "Watson"!
Get Smart was my favorite
I'd have to say "Law and Order: SVU" because they had crimes, their situations and how they were handled/justice that really got the viewers thinking. Some really excellent episodes I still think about.
I watch almost all of the detective shows (from Get Smart and Rockford Files to Murder She Wrote all the way to the current Elementary which depicts a modern-day Sherlock Holmes). I love the way they challenge me to try to figure out the mystery before the answer is revealed near the end of the show. Some current shows on TV also provide that brain stimulation (CSI, Criminal Minds, NCIS, Law & Order, etc.), but either I'm getting a lot smarter, or the shows writers are less creative, since I am finding it easier and easier to unravel the mystery long before the big "reveal."
PERRY MASON, MATLOCK AND IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT WERE MY CHILDHOOD FAVORITES!
Mannix when I was a kid, but when I see those old shows in rerun, wow what a difference from what we have now. My all time favorite show was HOMICIDE and I liked all the detectives on that show.
My favorites on televison are "Inspector Lewis", the modern Sherlock, and the reality of "The First 48". In the literary world, Sherlock Holmes, Reginald Hill's Dalziel and Pascoe, Peter Robinson's Ian Banks, and Catriona King's Marc Craig.
Yes, I agree Tubbs and Crocket, Columbo, Rockford Files, Magnum PI but let's not forget Paul Drake on Perry Mason, the Mod Squad, Moonlighting, Cagney and Lacy and my favorite as a kid - Surfside Six.
Magnum P.I. , Columbo and Steve McGarrett of Hawaii Five-O'
I love PBS and Inspector Morse and his successor Inspector Lewis!
Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote
Columbo. Just loved him. I have his complete series on DVD.
Inspector Clouseau- the genius of Peter Sellars! Am I showing my age?
Hart to Hart- thought they were tooo cute
Frank Pembleton, "Homcide"
I'm with Clifford growing up in the 60s/70s; I watched what my parents watched and their favorites seemed to be, Hawaii Five-O, Cannon, Mannix and Columbo. I even liked Baretta even though he was a police officer and not a detective.
Jessica Fletcher on Murder She Wrote.
Mannix
Columbo
"Book'em Dano"
Colombo
Tubbs & Sonny Crocket
As a young man growing up in the 60's and 70's, I used to enjoy watching Get Smart, "Leave a message at the tone" The Rockford Files", Cannon and Barnaby Jones.
Magnum P.I. Yes, I am a child of the '80s!
Steve McGarrett of the original Hawaii Five-O. His words to Danny are classic.
